Chasing the Sunset and Sunrise at Augstmatthorn

For a long time, my photographer friends and I had been eager to capture the majestic Augstmatthorn.

On a beautiful August evening, we set out on our long-awaited hike. The weather was warm and inviting, with the sun shining brightly as we made our way up the trail, optimistic about witnessing a stunning sunset.

No sunset

However, as the sun approached the horizon, clouds began to roll in, obscuring the sunset we had hoped for. Despite the change in plans, the post-sunset clouds eventually parted to reveal the breathtaking peaks behind them, providing us with a glimpse of the mountain’s grandeur. To our delight, we also spotted some majestic ibexes in the distance, adding an extra layer of excitement to our adventure.

Uncertain about what the next morning would hold, we set our alarms early, determined to seize another opportunity for capturing the beauty of Augstmatthorn. As we hiked up before dawn, the weather seemed promising, with clear skies and a crisp mountain air enhancing our anticipation.

What a sunrise!

Upon reaching Augstmatthorn, we were greeted by a spectacular sunrise. The sun rose behind the peaks, casting a warm, golden light that transformed the landscape into a scene of unparalleled beauty. The unique interplay of light and shadow across the rugged terrain created a perfect backdrop for our photography. We stood there, awestruck, as the first light of day illuminated the mountain’s dramatic features.

The sunrise was everything we had hoped for and more, making the early wake-up call and the previous evening’s cloud-covered disappointment all worthwhile. We captured the stunning moments and relished the serene beauty of Augstmatthorn, feeling incredibly fortunate to experience and document such a magnificent sight.
