Chasing the Sunrise at Sidelhorn

Embarking on a quest to capture the Sidelhorn at sunrise required a careful orchestration of timing and perseverance. My journey began with a drive to the Berghaus Oberaar, perched at Grimselpass—a destination accessed via a panoramic road that only opens once an hour. The road’s narrow curves and breathtaking views offered a magical experience, setting the stage for what lay ahead. Upon arrival at the hotel, I was greeted by a stunning sunset that bathed the surrounding peaks in golden hues, a perfect prelude to the adventure to come.

The conditions looked very promising.

With my alarm set for 4 a.m., I went to bed, eager and hopeful for the next morning. The anticipation of the sunrise fueled my determination, and when dawn arrived, I rose early, packed my gear, and put on my hiking boots. Switching on my headlamp, I began the hike in the darkness. The night sky was a spectacle of its own, with a myriad of stars twinkling above, creating a serene and otherworldly atmosphere.

Taking the wrong path

As I made my way along the trail, I passed a tranquil lake that mirrored the early morning sky, and in the distance, the imposing Sidelhorn beckoned. However, the hike took an unexpected turn when I veered off the correct path just before reaching the peak. This detour cost me valuable time, and I found myself racing against the clock. Determined not to miss the sunrise, I quickened my pace, pushing through the final stretch with renewed vigor.
