I braved an early morning hike and uncertain weather to photograph the Jöriseen lakes with their rare October snow, capturing the perfect sunrise and breathtaking views.
One of my photography goals was to capture the Jöriseen lakes in a rare moment—snow-covered but not yet frozen, a magical sight typically only possible in October, right after the first snowfall.
I set my alarm for 4 a.m. the night before, hoping for perfect conditions but unsure of what the weather would bring. When I woke up the next morning, I checked the radar and saw that clouds might cover the sun, making me doubt whether I’d get the shot I was aiming for. But despite the uncertainty, I enjoyed my coffee, packed my gear, and set off on the drive over Flüelapass.
Arriving at the car park, I strapped on my hiking boots, put on my headlamp, and began the hike in the darkness. Hiking before dawn is always an exhilarating and slightly eerie experience—just you, the trail, and the sounds of nature around you. As I climbed higher, the sky began to change, with the first light of the day painting the clouds in soft pastel hues.
Jackpot
By the time I reached my photo spot, the sun broke through the clouds—jackpot! The light was perfect, and I wasted no time flying my drone and capturing the scene from every angle. After taking some beautiful shots, I paused to simply take in the majesty of the surrounding landscape.
It was a challenging morning, filled with uncertainty, but moments like these are why I do what I do—chasing nature’s beauty and capturing it at just the right time.
